The Old School becomes new school with Kashing

Those who wander through the peaceful and friendly market town of Welshpool may one day find themselves lucky enough to stumble upon The Old School bed and breakfast snuggled into the graceful Welsh borders.
Here, you will find Vicki Griffiths, sole owner of the accommodation, which was adapted from a Victorian School in 2010. Single-handedly manning the B&B, Vicki ensures guests unwind into the comforts of spacious, ensuite rooms, and are free to enjoy a variety of hearty Welsh meals alongside unspoilt views over open countryside and a cosy log burner.
Located within the scenic Maes Mawr, The Old School enjoys a rural setting, adjacent to the historic Glyndwr’s Way, and just 10 minutes from the historic Powis Castle and the Welshpool / Llanfair Railway.

The problem

Prior to 2013, Vicki took room payments via cheque. The system left her waiting for days, or even weeks, on-end before the payment would arrive in the mail and the booking could be completely processed.
In 2013, however, she adopted card payment technology with multinational credit card and payment services provider. While the system ran adequately, Vicki found herself regularly unhappy with the service. The large, bulky card machine was unreliable and prone to faulting. Once technology advanced, Vicki was stuck on an old package with no viable option to upgrade – unless substantial fees were paid.
At this point, The Old School only accepted advance bookings over the phone. Customers would call up to make their booking and a 50 percent deposit would be taken via the card terminal. Unfortunately, this meant a huge number of customers abandoning their pre-booked rooms, forgoing their deposit and leaving Vicki in the lurch with an empty room to fill.

The solution

Fed up with a badly functioning card machine, Vicki turned to MWT Cymru who recommended Kashing. In June 2016, after reviewing its tempting all-inclusive membership options, The Old School ditched its card machine and adopted Kashing’s streamlined online payment technology.
Vicki, who oversees all bookings, explains: “Kashing sold me on their desire to nurture the relationship with my guests. Customers are a lot more comfortable paying themselves online via the secure service, so being able to book their full room in advance easily is a real bonus.”

Results

Since using Kashing’s online payment service, The Old School has seen a huge increase in customer demand. Many of the B&B’s guests fed back the desire to be able to pay for rooms in full online. By offering simple payments in a format that more and more shoppers are using, customers have felt more comfortable to send through large amounts of money than before. The proof is in Bara Brith – 50 percent of The Old School bookings are now repeat customers!
Not only has the move boosted customer bookings, convenience and security, but owner Vicki noted a huge decline in the number of room abandonments. Customers are now paying for the full room up-front, so there’s a lot more at stake than just the deposit. As a result, no-shows are now a thing of the past.
Vicki continues: “Before, I used to receive tonnes of junk mail from my previous provider which all talked in incomprehensible jargon. Kashing is much more straightforward and straight-talking.
I’m extremely happy with the service and would recommend others looking to diminish all of the stress that comes with managing payments in-house. There’s no way I’d go back now.”
